Michael Ross, an Executive Career Consultant with Resume Consultants Ltd., in Toronto, estimates 20-25% of the population fudge their resumes. "They want to make themselves look a little more glorious," he says, adding the embellishments are often unintentional. "People feel they have to boast on a resume," Ross says. "There's often a fine line between true honesty and exaggeration." Mr. Ross recalls one job candidate who said he had a Ph.D., which turned out to be from a U.S. mail-order catalogue.
